Some places just feel like home, even if you haven’t been back in years. This trip was a return to one of those places—Destin, Florida. The white sand, the impossibly clear water, and the familiar coastline brought back so many memories.

Even though I’ve been to Destin before, this was my first trip to Crab Island. It’s funny how we often go back to places hoping to relive old memories, only to realize you can’t really recreate them. The people are different, life has changed, and so have you. Instead, you get the chance to make entirely new memories in a place that’s always meant something to you.

We rented a pontoon boat and headed out to Crab Island. First of all, I had no idea Crab Island isn’t actually an island. It’s a giant sandbar where hundreds of boats drop anchor and spend the day floating in waist-deep, crystal-clear water.
The whole place has its own little floating community. There are floating restaurants, a general store, and little dinghy boats buzzing from pontoon to pontoon selling everything from fresh-cut pineapple and boiled peanuts to T-shirts and other beach essentials.

We spent some time snorkeling around the boats, where I was promptly accosted by a crab. Apparently I’d wandered a little too close to his front porch, and he made sure I knew it. Thankfully, he eventually decided I wasn’t worth the trouble. Beyond my territorial encounter, there were schools of fish gliding through the clear water, making it surprisingly fun to explore beneath the surface.
But honestly, my favorite part wasn’t the snorkeling. It was simply standing in the middle of the bay in warm, shallow water, chatting with family, floating when I felt like it, and letting the afternoon drift by.

Maybe that’s what returning to a favorite place is really about. Not chasing the past, but appreciating what made it special while making room for something new. You can’t recreate old memories, but you can create new ones—and sometimes those become the ones you treasure just as much.
